HIA Program:

United-states United States 2015

Sharon is a HIA Senior Fellow, and has participated in both U.S. based fellowships. Her first fellowship was the inaugural Atlanta program in 2015, and her second fellowship just ended this summer in Detroit.

She is a currently a second-year graduate student in the Department of Sociology at Princeton University. Sharon is broadly interested in international migration, urban sociology, and ethnography. Her work is currently focused on economic development and contestations of space in Los Angeles. Before Princeton, Sharon attended the University of California, Los Angeles and graduated in 2016. Her research focused on everyday experiences of bus riding in Los Angeles, and utilized ethnographic methods. In doing her fieldwork, Sharon focused on dependency on public transportation as a potential measure of quality of life. Within this discussion, job equity, bus equity, and public harassment were all salient concerns in exploring how residents within communities like South Central Los Angeles experience limited mobility.

Sharon is originally from South Central Los Angeles, and has volunteered extensively with organizations in her community. This has largely been with a focus on immigrant rights, as well as outreach programs for youth within the area.
